Balancing Passion, Family, and Purpose in a Small Family Business
Share
Running a small family business is no small feat. It’s a mix of passion, dedication, and a lot of late nights, often fueled by coffee and a relentless drive to succeed. For us, the team behind Black Tiger, this experience has been even more personal. We’re not just entrepreneurs—we’re parents, and full-time professionals, navigating this expereince while maintaining our full-time careers and keeping our family healthy, safe and happy.
Our venture started as a shared dream, something we could build together as a family. Both Jack and I, Sara, have demanding full-time jobs. Jack serves as a SWAT law enforcement officer, protecting our community, while I bring creativity to life as a marketing creative director. Despite our busy schedules, Black Tiger has become a central part of our lives, giving us a unique way to connect as a family and create something meaningful for others.
But what really makes this business special is the full involvement of our family. Our young girl has embraced the role of "junior entrepreneur" with enthusiasm. She helps us package orders, count inventory, print shipping labels, and even make trips to the post office. It’s been incredible to see the lessons she’s learning firsthand—from responsibility and attention to detail to understanding the importance of hard work and customer care.
Even our dog, the unofficial "Chief Motivator," gets involved. He’s the star of some of our promotional photography, always ready to pose and spread smiles on behalf of Black Tiger.
Veteran-Owned and Community-Oriented
Black Tiger is a veteran-owned business, which means so much to us. With Jack having served our country, we bring that same sense of honor and dedication to our business. It’s a badge of pride we wear, not just for ourselves but for the wider community of veterans, law enforcement professionals, and fitness enthusiasts who support us.
One thing we’ve committed to from the start is sourcing our products locally. We believe in supporting the small businesses and communities around us because we know firsthand the hard work it takes to succeed in this space. Plus, it allows us to create high-quality, carefully curated products that we’re proud to offer to our customers.
Handling It All in-House
One of the most rewarding (and challenging) parts of running Black Tiger is doing everything in-house. From designing our website and crafting social media content to product photography and shipping fulfillment, every aspect of the business is handled personally by us.
Running our own marketing campaigns has allowed us to tell our story authentically, which we feel is important and handling fulfillment gives us a direct connection to each customer. We’re reminded every day that behind every order is someone choosing to support Black Tiger and that means the world to us.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to grow and evolve, we’re excited for what the future holds. We’ve got big plans for expanding our product line and reaching new customers, while also staying true to our core values of family, community, and quality. And through it all, we’ll keep balancing passion, family, and purpose in this small but mighty business that means so much to us. So whether you’re a customer or just sharing in our journey, thank you for being a part of Black Tiger!
